Tregothnan Tea

Tea was first mentioned in British literature in 1615. The British took it to Africa and India, in fact wherever in the Empire it might be grown.

Tregothnan has a history of botanical firsts and is home to original introductions of Magnolia and rarities from Darjeeling. These Magnolias now tower to 60ft and are among the worlds largest in cultivation.

Tea comes from a special form of Camellia sinensis: Tregothnan was also first to grow Camellia ornamentally outdoors 200 years ago.

The belief in doing things well has persevered at Tregothnan: the Estate has stayed within the same family since 1335. Seven years of trials have been undertaken to achieve these fine teas that really deserve the accolade ‘English Tea’

Cornish Honey

Honey Bees
Bees have been around for millions of years - they were fully developed in their present form long before modern mammals had evolved.

Honeybees are the most important producers of honey. They gather nectar from flowers and plants and carry it to the hive or nest. Other worker bees then take over, preparing it for storing by adding enzymes. (Water evaporates away and this, together with the action of the enzyme, turns the nectar to honey.)

Cornish Potato Crisps

Cornish Chilli Sauces and Chilli Jams

Chilli Facts
Fresh Chillies are high in Vitamin C — twice the amount found in citrus fruits. When dried the Vitamin A content increases as much as one hundred fold. Hot chillies e.g. 'Habanero' contain 357% more Vitamin C than an orange. Red chillies are a good source of beta carotene.

The bite in chilli is called Capsaicin. Most of the capsaicin is contained in the seeds and the membrane which when removed makes the chilli milder. The burning feeling that you are left with on your tongue is caused by the relief of Capsaicin. This causes messages to be sent to your brain to release endorphins which are your body's natural pain killer. The endorphins then give you the feeling of relief and pleasure.

The release of endorphins lowers the blood pressure, a major indicator in heart disease, and has even been implicated in the fight against cancer.

Chilli is mildly antibacterial and is an excellent gargle for sore throats and laryngitis. In Victorian England, chilli peppers were prized for their warming properties in treating arthritis, chills, rheumatism, sprains and depression.

Cornish gifts

Cornish Gifts created by local artist 'Celia Duncan'
Having painted from a very early age, Celia Duncan sold her first paintings in galleries during her early teens. After bowing to family pressure, she followed a career in science for more than thirty years. She returned to her first love six years ago and has adopted a unique and quirky style - using acrylics to produce vibrant colours and fun paintings.

Her work often portrays fishing villages and boats in the West Country though she has painted many other locations throughout the country.
